Spring is in the Air!

Written by Jen Doyle

We are deep into the month of March and even though there is snow on the ground, the itch of spring is still there. With the onset of spring the focus is on spring cleaning and making the home lighter by eliminating the excess clutter. It will take more then vowing to your self that the chaos has to stop. With a well thought out plan you could reduce the stress level that exists stepping through your door into the paper jungle that is home. Here are a few tips to get you started…

1. Begin by organizing one small area first. If you start off by deciding that you will organize the whole house, you will become overwhelmed and never finish. Work on one space and build on the satisfaction that the now-organized area makes you feel.

2. Remember the three keys to de-cluttering. Sort, purge, and then organize. It’s very easy to become nostalgic and spend two hours reading your high school notebook. There is no time for that now. Work quickly and efficiently. Sort, purge, and then organize.

3. The most important rule of organizing is this: Everything must have a home! The reason why we become cluttered is the random things that are hard to place. Key chains, old ticket stubs, Fourth of July placemats. Where does it all go? This is a decision that will be made in the sorting process. It allows for a whole new way of thinking. Why do I need three cheese graters when I really only use one? This thinking will also seep into your brain as you shop. It will be hard to spend twelve dollars on a spring centerpiece when there are two piled up in the back of the pantry.

Getting organized is a challenge but the feeling of control that you will have is worth the effort. Losing the anxious feelings of “am I forgetting something” will make it all worthwhile.
